Cloud Blue Stoneware Mug

A straight-sided stoneware mug in a soft, cloudy blue glaze that thins to white where it runs.

The blue is not one colour: thick and saturated on the lower wall, paler over the throwing ridges, breaking to near-white at the rim and along the handle. Small dark flecks from the clay body show through. No two mugs cloud the same way.

Turn it over and the foot ring is raw stoneware, warm brown against the blue. Made by hand in Japan — size, weight and the exact run of the glaze vary between pieces.

• Japanese stoneware, wheel-thrown
• Throwing lines left visible, bare clay foot
• Round loop handle
• Dishwasher safe — hand washing keeps the glaze brighter
